Suzanne Collins presents a new prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, detailing the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy and his victory in the 50th Hunger Games. The book will be released on March 18, 2025, in various formats, with a film adaptation scheduled for November 20, 2026, directed by Francis Lawrence.

Set 24 years before the original trilogy, the story focuses on the Second Quarter Quell, where Haymitch from District 12 emerges as the victor. Collins drew inspiration from David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and explores themes of propaganda and the power of narrative. The theme ‘Real or not real?’ becomes increasingly relevant.

Haymitch, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original films, serves as a mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. His victory in the 50th Hunger Games, mentioned in Catching Fire, is revealed through his clever use of the arena’s force field to defeat the District 1 tribute.

Lionsgate has announced the film adaptation, with Francis Lawrence in talks to return as director. The Hunger Games franchise has sold over 100 million copies of the books and grossed more than $3.3 billion at the global box office. While the cast has yet to be announced, the film is set to be released in November 2026.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping not only delves deeper into Haymitch's character but also offers a critical view of power and control through propaganda. Fans will gain a comprehensive understanding of how Haymitch overcame the brutal challenges of the Hunger Games and how it shaped his future role.
